Exploration knows no limits. It’s not bound by time or space. The launch campaign film for The North Face’s NSE Spring Summer 22 Collection in collaboration with C41 Magazine, required a progressive music composition to accompany an otherworldly and surreal visual narrative. 

The NSE Collection takes The North Face’s iconic outdoor jackets to another dimension. 

This is expressed through the film’s ‘No Time, No Space’ concept, overlaid by 3D scans. The protagonists of the film land in a surreal nature landscape reminiscent of another planet, which leaves them to limitless exploration. Our challenge was to craft a composition that could enhance the protagonists’ VO, and extend the imaginary and alien world of the film, while at the same time feeling organic, human and relatable. 

Our approach was an ambient-electronic composition, which works in perfect harmony with the sound design. The composition is based on sounds taken from nature (wind noises and footsteps), and original field recordings of the NSE collection jackets in the outdoor environment, being transformed into custom music instruments. Defined by an abstract, glitchy and intricately layered aesthetic, the composition builds a world of its own, and helps push the visual storytelling to another level.
