Playful stunt from Cossette invited Canadians to share a Coffee Crisp with their American neighbours on July 4th

On July 4th, the iconic Coffee Crisp - a Canadian chocolate bar - was available in the US for just one special day, but there was a quirky twist: it could only be gifted by a Canadian. A one-of-a-kind vending machine was placed at the Canada - US border crossing at Peace Arch Park in Vancouver, BC, where Canadians invited their American neighbours to get a free Coffee Crisp. Developed in collaboration with Cossette, the stunt celebrated the spirit of friendship and cooperation between the two countries, showcasing Canadian generosity and good-natured fun. Sweet, eh?

“We’re thrilled to bring this surprising initiative to life, highlighting the special bond between Canada and the US and making this Canadian treat accessible to those who’ve been craving it, but couldn’t get their hands on it,” said Riona Coller, marketing leader at Nestlé Canada. “This was purely meant to demonstrate the unique charm of Coffee Crisp, sparking curiosity and anticipation. We’re excited to share this beloved chocolate bar with our American neighbours and see it bring them joy.”

With fans across the border eagerly requesting its availability on social media, the brand decided to stir things up with a playful stunt. The vending machine aimed to create buzz both at home and abroad by tapping into the chocolate bar’s appeal, rarity and unconventional nature.

“We embraced Canadian friendliness to share Coffee Crisp with our neighbours for just one day,” said François-Julien Rainville, associate creative director at Cossette. “Coffee Crisp is a legendary Canadian chocolate bar, and it was only right to share it with our American friends. Our goal was to spark excitement about Coffee Crisp, creating a sense of fun and connection that reaches across the border.”

The Cross-Border Vending Machine activation took place on July 4th, 2024. This initiative was part of a strategic partnership with Canadian creative agency Cossette, which was selected to lead national brand campaigns for Coffee Crisp with Nestlé Canada in June 2023.
