Alice Benton, associate music supervisor / producer at Siren, discusses her top two finds.

Butcher Brown ‘Solar Music’

I watched their Tiny Desk concert a few years ago and loved it, but for some reason never got round to doing a deep dive. I’m so pleased to have rediscovered them, because this album Solar Music is a bit of me. I love the jazz-fusion cross-genre thing and Butcher Brown are a great example of how amazing music can be when you think outside the genre box. I love their sound - it’s really unique but also feels expansive and explorative. The production is amazing too and there are some great collaborations on this album - ‘I Can Say To You’ with Vanisha Gould and ’Eye Never Knew’ featuring Pink Siifu and Keyon Harrold in particular really stood out to me. Just good vibes, looking forward to get this one on as we head into summer.

R.E.M ‘In Time’

Hear me out on this one - yes, I’m a 90s kid but my Dad loves his music and we were raised on a steady diet of R.E.M, Meatloaf, Dire Straits and Jeff Lynne’s ELO (thanks Dad!). When I was growing up, we used to holiday in the UK a lot, which meant a lot of long car journeys and a lot of Dad’s albums and playlists. I can really clearly remember singing ‘The Great Beyond’ from the back seat of the car because I loved the silly lyrics - ‘I’m pushing an elephant up the stairs / Over my should a piano falls crashing to the ground’. ‘Orange Crush’, ‘Stand’, and ‘Man on the Moon’ were also some of my favourite... I’m pretty sure I can still recite the lyrics! So really it had to be R.E.M- it’s pure and sweet nostalgia for me.
