Riff Raff Directors Experiment in Chaotic Visual Feast for Moses Boyd

After flying under the radar lately, Riff Raff’s directors in/out have reappeared in a literal ray of light. Their latest video is a promo for Moses Boyd’s ‘Stranger Than Fiction’ and is an ethereal exploration of how people experience sound.

The directing duo shot on film, meaning all visual effects were cleverly achieved in-camera, and then set about displaying their editing finesse to create a piece that does justice to such a genre-bending track.

The directing duo said: “The brief spoke of ‘hyper-musicality’. Outside of the obvious, this got us thinking about how might a sound ‘look’? What are our instruments, as filmmakers? The use of a reflective spray and a singular spotlight achieved this look; haloing the band in this intense glow. Playing off this visual hook we then set about composing our own rhythm. The looping trajectories, the projected shapes and the strobing light source were all used to achieve that desired ‘musicality’. Under the guidance of DP Spike Morris we pushed the in-camera capabilities of film to visually sculpt the music. The materiality of film meant we could really hack the medium to bend and manipulate the images around the music.”
